  • Autism

According to the Autism Society of America, autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. It impacts the normal development of the brain, resulting in impairments of social interaction, verbal and non-verbal and communication, and leisure or play activities.  In recent years, the conceptualization and criteria defining the condition called "autism" have evolved significantly. The definition has broadened so that autism is now seen as a spectrum disorder; "Autism Spectrum Disorder" The exact number of children with autism is not known. A report released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that autism and related disorders are more common than previously thought, although it is unclear if this is due to an increasing rate of the illness or an increased ability to diagnose the illness.

  • The Ethics Of Euthanasia

Euthanasia is the process of painlessly helping a terminally ill person to die. Known also as assisted suicide or mercy killing, euthanasia is illegal for humans in the United States. Generally, euthanasia is performed by lethal injection, using the same drugs as those on death row are executed. Hyppocrates, the father of modern medicine, stated in 400 B.C., "I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel". Today, doctors are still bound by this oath. The first law, or statute, enacted in America was entered in the books in New York in 1828.

The Hemlock Society is very vocal in their belief that euthanasia should be allowed, especially if the patient has conveyed those wishes. Very few stand on the middle of the road on this issue. Most religions and medical professionals are opposed to euthanasia. The topic was brought to the forefront of public opinion with the trial of Doctor Jack Kevorkian in the late 1990s. He was sentenced to 10-25 years in prison for the murder of Thomas Youk after giving him a lethal injection. Several foreign countries including the Netherlands and Belgium allow euthanasia to be performed on patients if certain conditions, such as chronic pain associated with an incurable illness, are met.

  • The Sleep Controversy

    Sleep

Scientist have always known that getting the right amount of sleep has been a positive attribute to having a healthy heart.  Studies have shown that heart attacks are more common on Monday’s just as the workweek starts. Dr. Imre Janszky of the Karolinska Institute and Dr. Rickard Ljung of Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare confirmed these theories this past week in a statement put out by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Sweden has a comprehensive registry of heart attack occurrences over the past decade. These statistics help the doctors come to their conclusions. The research further states a direct correlation to the spring forward, fall back time change that takes place during the year. Indeed, the studies found that when clocks are moved forward and people loose an hour of sleep that the occurrences of hearts attacks substantially increased.  Consequentially, the reverse happened, as clocks were set back 1 hour. The extra sleep proved to be extra layer of defense against heart attacks. Getting the proper amount of sleeps helps with decreasing high blood pressure, lowering blood sugar levels, and cholesterol levels.

  • Folic Acid And Pregnancy

Discovered in the early to mid 40’s, Folic Acid is recommended as a supplement for any woman wishing to become pregnant. Folate is the basic component in Folic Acid and is extremely important for cell division and repair especially during pregnancy. Women with a history of Folate deficiency are prone to newborns suffering from low birth weigh, premature birth, and neural tube deficiency (a problem which normally occurs in the 28th week of pregnancy). Folic Acid is also necessary for fertility in both men and woman and is always recommended prior to conception.

The United States Public Health Service recommends .04 mg of Folic Acid per day for woman with plans of pregnancy. Many countries including the US have introduced fortification of Folic Acid in flour and other bread products. All though fortification of Folic Acid in foods is not mandatory most countries have complied. In 1996, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published regulations requiring the addition of folic acid to enriched breads, cereals, flours, corn meals, pastas, rice, and other grain products.

  • Effects Of Agent Orange

Agent orange is an extremely toxic defoliate used during and around the time of the Vietnam war. The main purpose for Agent Orange was to clear the surrounding jungles of all organic plant life so that the Viet Cong could not use it for cover. Specifically Agent Orange contained dioxins. Dioxins are extremely poisonous when ingested or inhaled.  Side of effects of dioxins include: cancer, sterility, upper respiratory problems, and other long lasting health problems.

Official government records indicate that the United States Military sprayed 77 Million Litres of chemical defoliants including Agent Orange in Vietnam. The Environmental Protection Agency has labeled the chemical the most dangerous one known to man.

The pilots who flew these missions became so proficient at their jobs that it would take only a few minutes after reaching their target areas to dump their 1,000-gallon loads before turning for home. Flying over portions of South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia that had been sprayed, the pilots could see the effects of their work. Many of them adopted a grim fatalism about the job. Over the door of the ready room for Ranch Hand pilots at Tan Son Nhut Airport near Saigon hung this sign: "Only You Can Prevent Forests."
